How to Compute the Mean Percentage Score (MPS)
The Mean Percentage Score (MPS) tells you how well a class did on a test as a whole. You need three numbers: the learners' scores, how many learners took the test, and the total number of items.
Step 1: Find the mean score
Add up all the learners' scores, then divide by the number of learners who took the test.
Mean = sum of all scores ÷ number of learners
Step 2: Find the Percentage Level (PL)
Turn the mean into a percentage of the total number of items.
PL = (Mean ÷ total number of items) × 100
Step 3: Compute the MPS
Many DepEd MPS templates add a small adjustment to the PL. ClassToolsPH uses the same formula:
MPS = PL + 0.02 × (100 − PL)
Worked example
A section of 40 learners took a 50-item test. Their scores add up to 1,500.
- Mean = 1,500 ÷ 40 = 37.50
- PL = (37.50 ÷ 50) × 100 = 75.00
- MPS = 75.00 + 0.02 × (100 − 75.00) = 75.00 + 0.50 = 75.50
Tips
- Only count learners who actually took the test. Absent learners are left out, not counted as zero.
- Compute it per section, and separately for male and female learners, if your school head asks for the breakdown.
- Your division may use its own MPS template. If its formula differs, follow your division.
Let ClassToolsPH compute this for you
ClassToolsPH computes the MPS per section and by gender (highest and lowest score, mean, PL and MPS) as soon as learners submit, ready to print with your DepEd letterhead.
